Jade: I think the offensive extremes- what you mean when you're referring to garbage- in art and music are necessary, both to show us what is possible, and to remind us of what we do and don't like. H. R. Giger, Throbbing Gristle, and Lustmord may be personally disturbing, or seem like complete crap, but at least they provoke a response.
It's artwork, music, etc. that provokes NO response at all that worries me- sterile, soulless productions intended to pass through one's ears and be forgotten. Now THAT I can't stand. Make me angry, make me happy, make my ears bleed and my intestines quake, but make me feel something.
