Ya know Vain, that's probably why we aren't skipping that little bit, LOL
I mean, it may seem odd to alot of people, but that's the one thing that keeps us sane, the most. Some people that leave little offerings for the fae make a huge production out of it; We treat it just like we're feeding the birds or squirrels around here - just that the food is different. Though, did you ever notice that some birds LOVE peanut-butter cookies?

Well, with my daughter's brain cancer, we're actually keeping our celebrations a bit tame, this year. There'll be alot of *stay at home* and *stay inside* in everything we do - that'll be a huge change.
Normally for Winter Solstice we start an almost 2 week long celebration with a bonfire on the eve of the solstice. Daily acknowledgements to the gods and goddesses; candles, treats, offerings, incense. There'd also be alot of focus on fruits for the fae, typically cookies. Not to mention the specific rituals, obviously, but this year, we'll be skipping most of that. At least, ALL of the outdoor aspects.
As for what it means? It's the start of the end. The death of the sun - the long sleep, really. We bring a final harvest aspect into the ideal, as more of a *proof* or standard, a banner, even that we'll stake, to see the return of the sun's warmth. The spring rains. Life will flourish again!
Now you can see why we're avoiding alot of it. *Brain cancer* and *flourishing life* just aren't all that synonymous. Not to mention the depletion of her immune system - hanging around out in the snowbanks isn't a good idea, either.
The bonus is, we do observe Christmas. We will be doing gifts, meals and decorations for that, too.
